First of all,you guys could suggest any songs that could be put on the music section.I don't really mind the genre since it is for you guys to listen and talk between members.

Speech Day was over and it was a great performance.I hope that you guys felt that it was worth the effort you all had put in during the practice.All of you should have the confidence to believe in yourself as I know that all of you are capable in doing the things that you are interested in.Continue to work hard guys!

Congrates to the new committee!(: must try your best to do a great job and bring the choir further.I'm very sure that you all have the ability to do that.Yes..choir is Cca that needs a lot of teamwork and cooperation as well as being attentive. You all have been practicising 2 days weekly just to be prepared and put up a good 5 mins concert that everyone woud clap for.The audience would definitely enjoy the song you all are singing when u are enjoying it! Always remember the Key to singing is to SMILE no matter what happens.

There are times when you failed to do something to the standard that you expect.but the most important thing is that you enjoy the time when ypu prepare for it and of course learning new things on the way.."If u fail to do something, Stand up firmly and try again!" Failing is the key to success.

Last but not least..even though we have step down..u all still can approach us if there is anything.
we are just one call away..

We have gone through so much as a Choir and still remain firm even though our size is small.After so many practice,we accomplished many things and learn to improve ourselves through our Co-Curricular Activity(CCA) such as skills that requires leadership,team work and perseverance.Without these skill we would not be standing here.Although we never really spent a whole one year with the new members, to me and Wen Jing and the rest of the old committee it felt that this opportunity was given to us that made us believed that this Choir could still go on. When all of you watched us during your Secondary 1 Orientation, you saw the number of our Choir back then.

We believe in all of you and would keep believing forever that this Choir stands and with those three skills,you would all go very far.Always remember to do your best in Choir and do your homework.Also remember to smile,yawn,breathe properly and remember your first note.Also your scores,pencil and water bottle every practice.Last but not least,concentrate!

You might not realize it but when its your turn to step down, you would look back and wonder why the time went too fast.My advice to you is that you should cherish the things that you enjoy before you regret it once it is all over.

Though our days are over being your leader,we would still be watching over you and helping if you need any assistance.And to the new committee, I and Wen Jing wishes you all the best with the Choir and do your best in your position as a committee.Though you are still new, it's okay to make mistake as we are all learning and that is what we came for to do.Our life is a learning journey and we always take small steps to obtain an achievement through persevering and supporting one another.

And finally,I and Wen Jing congratulate the new committee!

There will be practice this coming Thursday 28/5/09.The timing would remain the same boys 3pm and girls 3.45pm.

Holiday practice would be up as soon as possible and the current day would be the 2nd week of the June holiday on Tuesday and Thursday.Though this is not the final confirmation by the committees and the teacher-in-charge.Take note that there will be choir practice during the holiday.

Also,this coming Thursday 28/5/09,all choir members are expected to come even those that had stepped down as the new committee would be taking up their position and the current one would be stepping down on that day.The new committee would be reveal on that day itself so don't go and ask who it would be from the current committee or the teacher-in-charge.

Hey Bishan Park Choir is having a joint concert with Beatty and Dunearn Secondary,if any of you are interested you can get the ticket for $12 through Mr Benedict Goh.It will be on 28 May,7.30pm at Victoria Concert Hall.Also don't forget to inform your parents if you are going as there will not be any letters given by the Teacher-In-Charge as it is a public concert.

And last but not least good luck for your examinations,study hard and do well.

Good effort today and guess what? i think u all sing well today and most importantly enjoyed ourselves during the performance! Well, i am sure that the sec 4s and 5s would have a deep memory of the speech day. See, hard work, concentration and team work definitely pay off! Till here, i guess this would probably be the last performance that the sec 4s and 5s would perform with u all. I hope that for the further performances u all would put in all your best and WE, sec 4s and 5s, would be giving u all the support the choir need as the audience. Sometimes, the seniors are fierce or strict to u all but i hope that u all know that they are doing this for the choir and hope to put up a good show.

Last but not least, examinations are round the corner, study hard for it and get good grades!(:

Speech Day Reminder

Speech Day is on Friday and all of you are release at 11.10am.The acknowledgment letter have been given to you either today or tomorrow.Choir members are expect to come for Choir at 2.30pm for Friday.Please memorize your song entitled "One Song" as it would be a very "intensive" practice on Friday.

You are expect to bring your Choir t-shirt along on Friday.Girls with fringe would need to clip it back so that guests during performance can see your face.Remember to smile always when singing and also project your voice when singing by dropping jaw,yawn,support and also have confidence with the song you are singing.

Your entry for the school song must be strong and the crescendo at the "see" section.Also don't forget the verse for "One Song".Also don't forget to have plenty of rest and water refrain chocolate and spicy food for now.

All choir members would have to report to the school hall at 2.30pm on Wednesday 8/4/2009 which is tomorrow for rehearsal on Speech Day ceremony.We are currently only performing the school song for the opening ceremony for the Speech Day Rehearsal.Please pass down this message to all choir members and ensure that they are punctual for tomorrow rehearsal.If anyone have classes until 3.10pm,please inform the seniors.It might be a late notice as we were just notified today also for the rehearsal.Hope that everyone could make it for tomorrow first rehearsal.

Important:All Choir members are required to bring scores for "One Song" and "Kyrie" for tomorrow practice.I stressed once more that you are to remind one another for the update.

Hey everyone here's an update of what's going on right now.
In the month of April ,Choir Practice for guys would have to report for Choir at 3pm for Thursday practice.Please be punctual for the practice as it is quite important.
Also don't forget to bring $1 for the choir fund for those who are still outstanding their payment and those that own the choir t-shirt and have not yet pay $10 please do so.
One more Important things Don't forget to bring your scores,water bottle and pencil with you for every practice even if you have memorize the song it is still required to be with you for reference or notes.

We have learn choreography for the songs that we are performing during Chinese New Year Celebration which is dated on 23 January 2009.We hope that you practice your dance steps so you won't get confuse for which would go first and next.The Attire during the day itself would be a red shirt and jeans.The attire that are not allow are Angsali PE T-shirt,skinny jeans,torn jeans,3/4 pants.This is because as we are performing we should try our best to look the best we can rather than wearing the school PE shirt which is not quite presentable for performance.

Great job on thurs!we sound really very very good even though mr chen says a lot of us didn't have enought sleep and not sounding up to the standard.But we tried our best during the performance and our effort is not wasted!well, and i must praise u all for the effort for coming down for extra practice from last friday to wednesday.
The next thing i want from u all is that put all your effort for the rehearsal for chinese new year performance! and of course put time in ur studies too esp the sec 4s..oh..and and..consider about the concert that mr goh and mr chen suggest next year.
Anyway!the next thing u could most probably look forward to is the retreat that i feel the choir members and stessen should have on this coming friday!i will be planning one and some suggestion from u all on monday!

Okay I should post this when it was 1st January anyway.Guys this is a new year and new challenges await us ahead.Let's do our best this year and make every year a memorable one between our members.Now Practice are on Monday and Thursday starting from 3pm and 3.30pm respectively.I hope that all of us will attend practices regularly from this year onwards and also keep this blog alive to be updated with the current news about the choir.We can do the best we can if we put the effort and our heart to it regardless the size of our choir.I hope that all of us can make choir as an enjoyable CCA for us to come for each practice.

Hi Everyone!
i have read all of ur reflections that u all write on friday...well..after reading it i have got a better idea of what u all are thinking about the last few practices and of course about choir..i would consider ur ideas of how to make choir practices a more lively one..
Somethings that i have to say after reading the reflections:Please to not feel left out and u are important to the choir..without u people..we won't be able to make good music like that we did during SYF last year..Maybe sometimes some of us may neglect some of u..its because we have too many things to handle..and also don't feel that without u..the choir would still be the same..i hope those who have the idea of quiting would still stay in choir till u graduate as everyone of u have a important role to play in choir..
we are very sorry if we have scolded u during practices..and its not fun scolding..we would scold u all as we want the choir to keep up the silver standard that we achieve during SYF and stay focus during practice time..

remember this line: "one for all,all for one.."

The Last Lecture

I was sent this videoclip this morning by a friend and thought that I would like to share this with all of you because I found it extremely inspirational and it made me feel like there is nothing impossible that I cannot accomplish because life is mine to live. Do take some time out to watch this when you aren't too busy.

Meanwhile, I hope that all is going well for you in SGS and with the choir. Know that I do think of you and miss all of you. It was a wonderful 3 years that I had with SGS and I wish we were sometimes still all in the same school. Do take care, concentrate on your studies, do well for the choir and for yourselves. You deserve to have a great choir and I know that it is within all of you to keep that spirit alive no matter who leads you and what circumstances may be.

rmbr during the garden blooms..i teach u all the relaxing method..used dat =) so u all will not be too nervous..stage fright.. =)but dun cry while using dat ok..hor choy may.=X

and stand properly..dun stand lyk muzi lyk dat..very sloggy..not nice

and 1 last thing SMILE to yr audiences..dun give them black face face..not nice de !

and of cuz..dun be too nervous until cannot sing.later the audiences cannot hear wad u all song,too soft or u all keep yr mouth close..cannot hear the words properly..

The Sec 1 Orientation performance for recruitment will be held in the school hall on the 11th Jan in the afternoon from 2-5pm together with all the other CCAs. You will have 10 minutes to sell yourselves, and also, you will need to set up a 'booth' where you can show stuff about choir and have the Sec 1s who are interested to sign up.

You will need to prepare:

1. A programme for the 10 minutes (what EXACTLY are you going to do and who is going to do it and who is going to prepare for it and how?)

2. The booth (pictures/video etc), sign up sheet etc.

3. You will need to FOLLOW UP with the students who are interested to make sure that they don't get attracted by other CCAs that are more 'on'.

Recruitment is EVERYBODY'S problem - and everyone needs to be involved.

I started realising this when my ex-primary school friend, who is a music fanatic, introduced me to this song. I went to YouTube and search for the song, and EVENTUALLY, it is this.

Surprisingly, after I saw this video, I felt physically uncomfortable. There is men donned up as a gay, and mostly, A MAN IN A TUTU!? Surprised, huh. Luckily you wont be seeing me wearing a tutu(aka "skirt") in school! haha, I am a famous "gay" in the whole of SGSS. LOL

Have you gone down to town to look at the Christmas lights? :-)

There are quite a few choirs that go out to do Christmas carolling during this time of the year, and its rather often to see them when you go out on weekends especially during these few weeks. Do hang around and check them out if you're not in a hurry - there's always stuff to be learnt from watching other groups perform.

Hello choir,

Will be out of town from 1-12dec 07, but contactable by sms. Pls. identify yourself if u msg me because I may not have your tel in my phone. Will be in the province of Yunnan in China. Won't be looking for internet access when I'm there, unless there's free wifi my phone can pick up so probably will not read any emails 'til I get back. Meanwhile, if there are urgent matters related to choir, pls approach Ms Yang or Mdm Ng or the school directly. I'll be thousands of miles away and won't be much help for immediate matters.

Will be back in and out of school the week after I get back to move out of the current staffroom and into the new staffroom. Anyone who wants to help is welcome to drop by! :-)

Meanwhile:

1. Shawn to please train 3 reliable people in the choir (you choose) on how to set up and handle the choir's mikes and stands. Shawn and Stessen are the only 2 people who know how to do it at the moment, so the lower sec choir members need to know. There will be performances where you need to do this in the 1st term already. Choir mikes and stands will be placed with Mdm Ng. Make arrangements directly with her please.

2. Wen Jing: Pls. approach Mr Wee and let him know the choir will be keen to help out with the teaching of the school song as part of the Sec 1 Orientation and to please include a slot for it in the Orientation programme that he will be planning.

3. Those of you who don't have the choir t-shirt yet, please bring $10 to the practice on the 28th Dec and I will pass you your t-shirt.

4. I believe all of you are aware that you have to sing for Sec 1 Orientation within the first week of school and that this performance is VERY IMPORTANT because you need to impress the new students so that as many as possible will join choir. We are targeting having at least 3 members from each class. I expect to hear you at performance standard when I see u on the 28th so please do your homework and don't forget what you need to do. Approach your section leaders and student conductors for help. Choir committee may wish to hold their own practices before that if possible to make sure that you are all ready when we see you for that final practice on the 28th. By then, if you are not ready, it will really be too late and there will be nothing I can do to help you because I will not be around.

5. RE: Party. I'm thinking of having a simple post-practice potluck party on the 28th after the choir practice since its the last time I'll be seeing you. Think of something you can make or bring that's enough for about 3-4 people, and I'll coordinate. More details when I get back, but think of possibilities of what to bring/make. :-)

CONGRATULATIONS ON SURVIVING CHOIR CAMP 2007!

It was really fun organizing this camp for all of you, and I really enjoyed holding the Amazing Race. You'll never think of 1 cent coins in the same way again! :-) Congratulations to the "Basket Case" Team on their victory! I think everyone did really well for that activity, and all groups worked well together. I'm very proud of all of you!

I'm sure you're glad to be home and will have many memories to cherish about the Amazing Race and the Night of Mayhem! :-) Thank you to all for a wonderful 2007. Have a good rest and see you for your final choir practice of 2007 on the 28th Dec 2007 9am to 12pm in the Commerce Room. Don't forget! There's lots to do to prepare for the Sec 1 Orientation in the first 2 weeks. Don't forget the many lessons learnt in Woven Threads, and remember to do your homework in the long time that we don't see you because... its a long time!

It was rather fun to be alone in the school at night - no other groups were having a camp and it was only us - on a rainy and cold night in the Multi-purpose Room and the Music Room.

Painting the Choir Banner

3 meters of black cloth + 3 cans of paint in red, yellow and white + 3 hours = Banner!

I drew the words out in chalk and everyone painted. We left the word "CHOIR" in black and painted everything else instead of painting the words and leaving the background.

Muzi was in charge of cleanliness - which was a big job considering how painting something like this is a rather messy affair.

Wen Jing did a very good job of painting the white outline for the word "CHOIR"

Jia Xuan paints very neatly too! :-)

Wenjing had to touch up all the jagged edges that the other painters created. And Chan Minh and Xin Yi did a fabulous job of achieving the color blend from red to orange to yellow that was meant to make the backdrop look like it was on fire.

Adding the final touches - some parts needed a 2nd coat of paint because the fabric was absorbent and 'absorbed' the paint leaving dark blotches. A 2nd coat of paint managed to fix that and the colors were really nice and bright.

The finished product after about 2.5hrs - left in the safety of the staffroom to dry until Monday when we will hang it up during the break in the practice.

Now... how are we going to get the banner unstuck from the newspaper?!?!

More Information About the Choir Camp

Hello everyone,

Just to remind everyone that the camp is compulsory, so the consent forms need to be returned. People with difficulties in attending MUST SEE ME AS SOON AS POSSIBLE as I will need to have a word with YOUR PARENTS/GUARDIAN.

The Camp starts at 8.30am on the 20th Nov, and will be an overnight camp that will end on the 21st Nov at 9.30pm. 2 full days and 1 night. We will be using the Multi-purpose Room and the Choir Room, and boys will sleep in the Commerce Room and the girls will take the Multi-purpose Room since there are more of us. Mr Goh, Mr Chen and myself will be staying with all of you. In addition to the 2 rooms, we have also booked the male and female toilets and showers in Block B (under the hall) for your use throughout the camp.

You will need to bring the following:

Sleeping bag/mattress/something you can sleep on. Remember also that the rooms are air-conditioned and you will want something that can keep you warm.
5 tshirts and 3 bottoms (shorts/pants/skirt etc). In addition to your choir tshirt and PE tshirt you can bring your own non-school clothes. Whatever you bring must allow you to move comfortably as we will be playing games and having activities etc
For the Amazing Race activity on the 1st day, you will need: A street directory, at least $5 in your EZLink Card, and $5 cash.
I'll let you know how many meals we are catering and how many we will need to eat on our own so you know how much money to bring.
You also need to have your own toiletries with you (Shampoo, soap, toothpaste etc).
You will also need to have writing stationary with you.
Choir file and waterbottle.

More details will be provided at a later date when I brief the choir about the camp. In the meanwhile, I'm giving you this list first so you can get hold of the stuff you don't have yet.

Dear choir members,

Thank you for coming to FACETS last night, and for behaving well in the recital studio. It was nice to see many of you listening very attentively, and reading the programme for information on the songs as they were being sung.

I also want to say thank you for all your work on the Choir Exchange on Thursday afternoon (13/9), and that the experience was a beneficial one for you, where you've learnt many lessons on how to manage an event. I am proud of our new commitee, and how they are slowly but surely learning the ropes on leading their new team. Its been a very busy year for the choir with so many things going on, and I hope that in the course of the year, you have many pleasant memories, accomplishments and friendships that have come about because of choir.

As with everything in life, cherish the good memories, and learn lessons from mistakes that have been made, so that you will grow as a person. I'm happy to see many choir members who are slowly changing from being young children to young adults. I've known some of you for 2-3 years already, and am happy that you are blossoming into lovely people. You may have already realized that being in choir is not just about singing, but about becoming disciplined and cultured adults with good character. Thank you for trusting us, and allowing us to lead you. Most of all, thank you for your dedication to the choir, and we look forward to your continued support as you continue to change and grow.

Its now time to buckle down and study for the year-end exams, and I'm sure that with diligence and perseverance, everyone will be able to reap the results that they deserve. Work hard, and celebrate your successes, and see you after the exams are over.

Its been a while since I've updated this blog... so here goes:

We got ourselves new choir t-shirts right in time for our National Day ceremonial involvement. Choir led the singing of the anthem and school song, and also helped with a singalong session of national day songs in the concert segment of the day. T-shirts are meant for all choir and choir-related activities and can be worn for the Monday and Thursday CCA practices.

Choir (and all other CCAs in general) stands down after the September holidays because everyone needs to focus on the Year-end examinations that are fast approaching. Its been a really busy year for us, with so many things that we had to be involved in throughout 2007, and a hiatus will be very refreshing.

Practices resume after the papers are over, and we then start preparing for christmas-related work, and the upcoming Sec 1 Orientation. There's much to look forward to, so have a good study break and come back energized and ready to sing.

1)12th june, go to east coast park at 9.00 am.

2)The meeting point will be at macdonalds.

3)Firstly,we will gather everyone and that go to a desire area.

4)Next, there will be a BEACH VOLLEYBALL COMPETITION.it will in either groups of 2 or 4.

5)We will have a short interval to buy drinks and maybe if you wish,jump into the sea.

6)After that,we will do the 'traditional' thing that we do on the sec 4s which is burying them.lastly,final debrief and ends the day.

Dear choir,

Please let me know by the 18th June, how many tickets you will be wanting for the concert you are performing in (for your parents/siblings/grandparents/relatives etc) and to bring $10 per ticket so that I can settle all sales by then. If you've already bought tickets through your form teachers, please let me know the number of tickets you have bought so that I have a rough estimate of whose parents and families will be attending.

If any of your parents are keen to help out on the day of the concert with make-up, costuming etc, please also let me know by that day. Having adults around to help will be much appreciated as we'll all be busy and there will be things to do that will require spare hands.

Enjoy your 1 week away from choir practice, remember to do your homework (a little bit every day so that you are always familiar with what you need to do). Remember that we're preparing for a performance and standards must be there. Now that we've achieved a silver for SYF, we need to maintain our standard. All of you deserve to perform to an audience that will applaud you for your wonderful singing - but in order to get that, a lot of hard work needs to be put in, not just during practices, but on your own as well.

And start saving $10 for your choir t-shirt.

Practices during term time re-commence on 17May 3-6pm. More information on the 6Jul concert will be given then. Attendance for all practices is absolutely compulsory. People who have a problem with this are to speak to Ms Koh IMMEDIATELY so that things can be sorted out. Letters for parents will be distributed on 17/5.

Sec 2-3 members are to bring their scores for "When You Believe" and "Seasons of Love" for the rehearsal on Thursday. As with all practices, please revise before you come as you will be expected to know the music and teach the Sec 1 members.

SILVER is an excellent accomplishment for our choir, especially because we are one of the smallest choirs entering SYF this year, and because its our very 1st attempt at SYF.

I want to tell you how proud I am of you for having come this far in your preparations for our very first SYF. Thank you to all choir members for a productive rehearsal at Victoria Concert Hall yepesterday. With less than a month to SYF, each and every member must do the best he/she can to secure success for the choir. Every individual matters!

Things you can do:
1. Organize your own sectional meetings
2. Go through your music on your own for at least 20-30 minutes a day
3. Do your vocal exercises to train for stamina
4. Practice standing in your concert shoes to get used to them.
5. Drink lots of water and rest well. Get at least 8 hours of sleep. This will help prevent you from falling ill. You need to look after yourself because sick people cannot sing well.
6. Eat less spicy and 'heaty' foods.
7. Do not shout and scream - protect your instrument.
8. Get to know your choir members better.

If we all do our part, we will succeed and be the pride of the school :-)

The Sec 1-3 choir members (minus Shawn and Gugan) at the Science Center, on Day 2 of CHOIR CAMP 2007... we really missed Gugan, and didn't realize Shawn was missing until we were on the way home. Monday was all work, so today everyone got to have fun and as we descended on the Science Center for the day.

Finally, the first proper post of 2007, featuring the new choir for this year with our intake of new Sec 1s. We're really glad to have everyone on board and it looks like its going to be a really wonderful year singing together.

Dear all,

I've been neglecting this blog coz' the beginning of the year has been SO BUSY! Still, here's a warm welcome to all those who have joined "The Voices in the Garden"... we hope that all of you will stay on, and that the choir will become part of your life in this school, and where fond memories and firm friendships will be founded.

We also welcome even more new people who may be interested in joining us... the more the merrier! :-) Just drop by our room at D04-00 for a voice-test and to watch the practice. Everyone is welcome... well, unless of course, you're tone deaf! Then you'll be our mascot and errand slave! *chuckles*

Anyway, look forward to our CNY performance... we'll be wearing a red top with jeans... members who don't own that have time until then to buy and borrow (but not steal!). Make sure its RED... completely RED! There will be an upper and lower sec concert, and we'll be performing twice. Its also a good chance for us to show the school how much we've grown in the 4 years that we've been around, and to put up a good 1st performance for 2007 to set things right.

Dear Choir,

Please take note of the following:

Sec 1 CCA Orientation
Choir to gather at 1.30pm for warm-ups and final preparations. School will be dismissed at 12.40pm, and you are to have your lunch and change into choir choir costume (the tuxedos and purple dresses) by 1.30pm.

The 9 classes of Sec 1 students will be put in 15 groups. The groups will spend 10min sessions with each CCA, which means that we will have to sing 15 times for them. The time of the activity is from 2.30pm to 5.30pm. ALL choir members are expected to be part of the CCA Orientation performances.

Choir Practices
A reminder to all, that choir practices are from 3.00pm to 6.00pm on Mondays and Thursdays in F04-00. Please be present and punctual for all practices, and get permission from any of your choir teachers if you're not able to make it for GOOD reasons.

We also wish to welcome Mr Greg Chen on board. Mr Chen will hold Monday's practice, and Mr Goh will hold Thursday's practice. Note that for the next 2-3 weeks, Mr Goh wants to start choir practice at 2.45pm instead of 3.00pm as he has duties to fulfill to the nation (I mean Reservist, not expanding our population... yet.).

We also wish to welcome Ms Yang on board. Ms Yang replaces Ms Leow as one of the teachers-in-charge of choir.

I am calling a choir meeting after school on the 1st day of school (3 Jan) - it will take 1.5 hrs. Its to settle Sec 1 orientation and recruitment matters and attendance is compulsory. Upcoming X'mas Performances

Some friends and I will be performing at the Esplanade on Christmas eve and day in the evening. The performances are free, and will be at the indoor stage that's in the foyer, in between the left durian and the right durian (the concert hall and the theatre). We've been rehearsing since August, and it'll be lots of fun, so do drop by if you happen to be in the area and in the need for some 'mas cheer.

Performances start at 6.30pm and the last one ends at 9.30pm. 24th and 25th December 2006 at the Esplanade - Theatres on the Bay. :) We call ourselves Project Lumeni.

Dear Choir,

Please be reminded that there is no choir on the 4th Dec. All of us (except Mr Goh) will be out of Singapore and unable to supervise the practice. There are 2 more remaining practices for the December holidays. Remember that on the last practice, I'll be doing a sound recording of "You Raise Me Up' to be compiled for a video presentation that we'll be running for the performing arts CCA orientation.

Remember that recruitment from the new Sec 1 cohort is mandatory to our survival and participation in the SYF. EVERY SINGLE CHOIR MEMBER needs to do something about it to make sure we make it.

I'm off to Hongkong on Saturday and will be there until the 12th Dec. Until then, take care, and stay cool! Choir RAWKZ! Oh, and Mr Nerva asks me to send his regards to all of you and to say that he thinks Jeryl's very entertaining and funny, and to convey that he thinks the choir sounds great! :) By the way, he's Gayle Nerva's uncle, in case you're wondering about the name.

This is a rather interesting idea... maybe we can come up with something like that in our school, except that I think the song may end up becoming an hour long!

THE COMPLAINTS CHOIR Project

In May 2005 we invited people of Birmingham to complain about anything they want and sing their complaints out together with fellow complainers. The project was open to everybody - no singing skills required. Many people sent in their complaints - about Birmingham, about other people, about world issues and most of all: about themselves. Fifteen people finally signed up to the project, who had the courage to take responsibility for their complaints. The Participants transformed the complaints into an impressive choir song during a two-week complaints workshop with the help of a local musician.

The First Complaints Choir of Birmingham became a surprise success and soon after we received many requests from people who hoped for a complaints choir in their hometown as well. They expressed (almost with a certain pride) that in their particular town people are especially talented complainers: either by quantity (Belgrade), existentialism (St. Petersburg) or sophistication (Buenos Aires).

So far Complaints Choirs have been organized in Birmingham, Hamburg, Helsinki and St. Petersburg. In each place the we worked with a local musician.

The complaints collected to the song can vary from small daily irritations into global issues. Anything that truly annoys people is useful material for the Complaints Choir. In Birmingham people complained for example about unfriendly bus drivers, dead bananas and slow computers. In Helsinki the most favourite topics were ring tones of mobile phones, people who smell in public transport and the fact that Finland always looses to Sweden in competitions. While Hamburg- Wilhelmsburg- Complaints Song was slightly more political from its content, St. Petersburger's emphasized deep basic human issues like: "I complain about existential horror".

Dear Choir,

Special thanks to Alphonso, Stessen, Jeryl, Zhafri, Titi, Jaime and Shawn for doing "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" at Rivervale Pri this morning - they did an excellent job and everyone was really impressed with the performance. Alphonso did a good job as our soloist, even though he transposes the song every time he sings the verse, making everyone go, "Hmmm..."

Announcements regarding Monday:

We are having choir from 10am to 3pm as like the previous week, and Ms Leow is in charge of all of you as I'll be in the Arts House conducting a drama workshop for students from RGS, RI, SCGS and ACS. We will be in one of the rooms in Block F, 3rd floor. If you can't find the choir, call Shawn at 98253049.

Remember that you need to bring your scores, your file and your water bottle. Wear your school pants/skirt with your PE/Choir t-shirt. Attendance is compulsory, and people who are not able to come must contact me before Monday if there are problems. Remember also that Jeryl is inviting everyone to his chalet after choir, so if you are going, you may wish to bring a change of clothes. I won't be able to be there as my workshop only ends in the evening, so please throw Jeryl into the pool/sea on my behalf!

Mrs Tan will be treating the choir members who sang at the Primary schools to pizza... so lunch for this Monday will be provided for those people.

Hey hey!

Just a reminder that for tomorrow's (THU) gig, we need to meet at Xinmin Pri at 7.30am sharp - if people can start arriving by 7.15am, even better, as we need all the warming up we can get, and the teachers may need help setting up the promotions booth.

Now... can you also perform on FRI? We just got an offer to promote our school at Rivervale Pri (in Sengkang). Those who are able to make it (Please try to!) need to be at Rivervale Pri by 8.15am (Take LRT from Sengkang MRT).

If you don't know how to get to these places, look up www.streetdirectory.com.sg and find out how to get there. They're all within the vicinity of our school's neighborhood, so should be rather easily accessible. You should also arrange to meet up and go together esp. if you're younger and not used to travelling on your own. Please also remember to check back to this blog for announcements and updates...

A note to those going to Xinmin: Meet at 7.30am outside the general office of Xinmin pri. For those who need directions, its the school near Mr Goh's house, and you can take 74 and 147 to it. Got other buses but I only know of those. We perform at 8.00am so warm-ups are very important!

Dear choir,

Please note that practice for this week will be as follows:
Wednesday 2.00pm to 5.00pm
Venue: Music Room D03-03

Friday: 9.00am to 12.00pm
Venue: Meet at the foyer at 9.00am sharp to proceed to the practice venue which is not yet confirmed. It will NOT be the music room because that room will be used for the O levels.

THERE IS NO PRACTICE THIS MONDAY.

Holiday Practices
All holiday practices will be on Mondays from 10.00am to 3.00pm (lunch break in between for 1 hour). The practices will run for the entire duration of the school holidays as they only occupy ONE day of the week. All choir members are expected to attend this practice. Absentees will need to submit MCs or letters from their parents. Students who are going overseas will need to submit letters from their parents IN ADVANCE.

All choir members are expected to pass this information on to the other members, including those who are not on MSN and who do not have HPs for SMSing to. Section leaders are in charge of making sure that all their members are aware of the practices and are present.

This post ends off a wonderful year of The Voices in the Garden. Choir will be renewed and revamped come late October, and it will all be very exciting and challenging. See you after the exams! :)
