And I may have left out stuff I've forgotten about... let me know if I have!

There's much to look forward to for 2007, and we can only go further than where we are now, which should be something everyone can look forward to. 2006 has been a year where the Voices in the Garden has found its feet, and while the choir may have been in existence for 3 years, it is only in 2006 that people are finally beginning to realize who the choir is, and that there is much potential in the budding talents we have in our midst. This post ends off a wonderful year of The Voices in the Garden. Choir will be renewed and revamped come late October, and it will all be very exciting and challenging. See you after the exams! :)

Dry Bones by Consonance

A rather low-res video of my favourite song from the concert - Dry Bones. Have always liked black gospel style choral arrangements so this is right up my alley.

The end is nigh

Dear Voices in the Garden,

This is an official announcement from the head gardener, informing all voices in the garden that the garden gates will be shut temporarily until the last week of October. Gardens need rest, to flower, and for bees to come and pollinate the flowers so that new flowers and plants will grow by the time the garden is open again.

This has been a good year for the garden. We've received an award for being an "A" grade garden by expert gardeners from England. We've also had many interesting things organized in the garden - amazing races, beach parties, kite-flying... wow! Its been one very productive year, and I think all the flowers, trees and plants have contributed to the beauty of our garden, and made a difference even in the smallest ways. Of course, there has been a lot of weeding, and we are better off without the weeds because we now have a fine garden.

(I think someone will have to explain to Muzi what this is about...)

THE SINGERS CONCERT

This is a notice to those who are coming along for this afternoon's THE SINGER'S CONCERT at the SINGAPORE CONFERENCE HALL. Please be at Tanjong Pagar MRT Station (Station Control - where you tap your EZLink Card) at 4.00pm sharp. Its a short walk to the SCH from the train station, but I am not walking back to retrieve latecomers.

The thing will end by about 6.00pm and you'll need to make your own way home. Please pass this message on to the rest of those who are going because I'm not going to be contactable for the 1st part of the day. You're also advised to dress smart casual - meaning no bermudas and slippers, but pants and skirts etc are fine. Other people from other schools will be there, please create a good image for our choir.

Otherwise wait we all say got A for exam, then nobody believe!

CHORAL SINGING

Choir name The Voices In The Garden (SGS CHOIR)
Presented by Benedict Goh Chia Yung

VOCAL EXERCISES

This was a carefully organised warm-up. Pitch needs to be more critically controlled - it is very important to ensure that the singers start and finish really securely in tune with each other and the pitch as given from the piano. The choir responded in a disciplined manner, and the basic tone quality shows promise throughout the range. Tone colours are not always uninimous or varied enough. Clarity of diction was usefully explored in different registers.

PROGRAMMES

Ching-a-ring Chaw (Copland)
This was an enjoyable and well enunciated performance with reasonably effective dynamics. The final section needs greater unanimity of pitch. Ends of phrases need to be more disciplined and carefully defined.

Benedictus (Lewis)
This was very attractively done, with careful chording and very good balance between the voices - particularly the blend of sopranos and altos. Overall it was carefully shpaed and expresssively done. Breathing needs a little more care at the end.

Gao Shan Qing (Gooi Tah Choe)
Very good. This was a very well controlled and highly effective performance, with disciplined ensemble, generally good pitch and good balance of voices.

This was a really promising performance today. Platform discipline needs a little more care - especially going on and off the stage.

GRADE
A

A: an outstanding performance with little reservation
B: a very good performance with some reservation
C: a competent performance with significant reservation
F: failure to reach the standard required to pass

A=Distinction, B=Merit, C=Pass, F=Fail, ABS=Absent

Choir in the Garden

We went outdoors for our choir practice, at the Tavistock Park which is just a 5 minutes walk away from school and next to the old school. It was nicely empty, and we had the whole place to ourselves, which was good because we could get back to nature and examine our roots.

Holiday Practices

Please take note of the following:

MONDAY 4th Sept 9.00am-12.00pm
Assemble at the school foyer at 9.00am sharp! Wear your choir t-shirt/school t-shirt, shorts, track-pants or bermudas... bring your own drinking water, and carry your choir files with you.

WEDNESDAY 6th Sept 9.00am-12.00pm
Dress the same as Monday, bring your own water and choir files.

Attendance for both practices is compulsory... you're going to need a letter if you're not able to attend. Please inform me if you've got other school activities at the same time.

Regarding 10th Sept
Those who are going for The Singers' Concert, please meet at Tanjong Pagar MRT Station (control station) at 3.45pm sharp. We will walk to the Singapore Conference Hall from there. I reckon there are about 6 of us in total. EDUsave forms will be given out on Wednesday, please make sure that if you are 1 of the 6, that u are there to receive it.

Regarding 16th Sept
Those who are going for the Consonance Concert (there are 20 of you), please keep yourselves free from 6.00pm to 10.00pm. Transport will be provided to and from the concert, but the drop off point will probably be either Hougang or Serangoon MRT Station as the school gates will be locked at that time and the bus won't be able to enter.

Please note dress code for both the concerts is smart casual - you don't have to wear your school uniform for either.
